Over the past few years we have dealt with spyware infection on many hundreds of desktop and laptop PC's. The first check we usually make is to scan with Malwarebytes and this gives us a good indication of the state of the PC. Malwarebytes can be used as a free version for home use and a Professional version for business use. We recommend using the Professional version on all PC's even if you are not a business as this has an "always on" protection mode. This monitors your PC while in use and alerts you to issues rather than having to scan at regular intervals which you would need to do with the free version.
